9th May 2006: Canon 30D testing:
I decided to upgrade my 20D. '399€ + 20D' change offer was too tempting as my camera was heavily used (bought September 2004) with some 20 000 actuations. As most of us know, 30D is a rather conservative upgrade from its predecessor. As opposed to what there is difference between Canon 10D and 20D...
My initial findings of 30D vs. 20D in ten days of mainly bird photographing:
Picture quality is almost identical. Propably I got more impact for picture quality from supplied raw converter, Digital Photo Professional 2.1.0.2. I have been using DPP since I bought 20D and has been very happy with it.
Speedier operations and faster buffer, even with fast paced bird photography camera will not get busy mode so easily
Shutter sound more quiet, or at least softer than with 20D.
Auto focus: if there is some difference(?), I cannot notice it when shooting.
In Ai Servo mode + continuous high speed mode camera seems to be more responsive than with 20D, but I assume that it can only feel like that because of larger buffer (Raw pictures 6 -> 11).
ISO sensitivity steps can be optionally reduced to 1/3 steps, and ISO value is shown in viewfinder as you change it. In my opinion these are valuable additions especially in low light wildlife shooting.
2.5" lcd -display with 230000 pixels and more optional browsing styles + rgb diagram. Very useful features. I also find display bright enough for outdoors use, at least up here in North.
And here a few samples from Finland and Estonia. Quality looks like identical to 20D pictures even as 20x30cm (8x12) enlargements:
